OLYMPICS HISTORY

The first Olympic event was held in 776 BC. A cook named Corebus won 192-meter footrace and become first Olympic champion. The Olympic Games were started as religious festivals of the cult of Zeus, but had a secular character with mission to show the abilities and physical qualities of participants. The Games were held between august 6 and September 19 every four years on honoring of Zeus a religious festival. The Games were named a sacred site Olympia which is near the western coast of Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. . The official symbol is five interlocking colored rings with white background, which represents continents of North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia.

In Athens, Greece the first modern Olympic were held in 1896. The 280 Participants from 13 nations was participated in 43 events. In 1896 first Olympic marathon was started on the route of run by the Greek soldier who brought news of a victory of war over the Persians from Marathon to Athens.

  The Olympics were truly become an international sporting event after 1924, when in Paris the VIII Games were held, from 44 nations the 3000 athletes were competed and the first closing ceremony was held in this event In summer 2004 nearly 11000 athletes from 201 countries competed, it become a record of century. Traditionally women were not participated in games and only men were allowed to participate but know IOC playing an important role to participations of women. In last 20 years, the IOC has been encouraging to National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (Ifs) to increase the participation of women.
