Jos Buttler announced resign from England ODI Captainship
Jos Buttler has resigned as England’s ODI captain. The England team lost its matches against Australia and Afghanistan, marking Buttler’s sixth consecutive defeat as captain. Buttler announced his resignation in a press conference, stating, “I am stepping down from England’s captaincy, and I believe this is the right decision for me and for the team. I am confident that someone else can come in and take the team to where it should be.”
In the 2023 World Cup, England was eliminated in the group stage, while in the 2024 T20 World Cup, they were knocked out in the semi-finals. Buttler led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He was appointed captain in June 2022, replacing Eoin Morgan, who had guided England to their 2019 World Cup triumph.
Buttler is regarded as one of England’s finest ODI batsmen. Harry Brook is being considered as his potential successor, while Ben Duckett and Joe Root are also in contention. Under Buttler’s leadership, England won only four out of 14 matches and secured just three wins in nine games during the 2023 World Cup. Out of his 11 ODI centuries, Buttler managed to score only one while serving as captain.
Buttler added. “This tournament was going to be important results-wise for my captaincy, and obviously two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover from some tournaments before, it probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy.
“It’s a shame, I am sad about that. With Brendon only coming in recently, I was excited about working closely with him and hoped for a quick turnaround to take the team forward, but it’s not worked out that way.
